The Mount Marty women’s basketball team went on a 22-4 run in the second half to overcome a 14-point deficit and beat Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) opponent No. 17 Northwestern 67-65.

“You’re down 14 in the middle of the third and against Midland we were down 13 in the fourth,” Schlimgen said. “Our kids just don’t worry about the scoreboard and just kept playing which is a coach’s dream.”

The Red Raiders (11-6 overall, 6-6 in GPAC) built a six-point halftime lead thanks to their full-court press and strong defense, holding Mount Marty (11-7, 5-7) to 36.4% field goal shooting and forcing 14 turnovers.

The Red Raiders went on a 10-2 run to start the second half and give themselves a 14 point advantage. The Lancers would not quit. They responded with a 10-2 run of their own to end the third quarter, cutting the lead back to six. The Lancers momentum carried through the quarter break, and they went on a 12-2 run to start the fourth quarter.

“Our kids kept battling,” Mount Marty head coach Todd Schlimgen. “I thought we were doing some good things to start the third and they made a couple shots, but we never let that faze us and we just kept playing hard.”

A three-pointer gave the Lancers a 58-54 lead midway through the fourth. Northwestern scored four straight points on free throws to tie things up at 58. Mount Marty responded with four straight points of their own.

The two sides would go back and fourth scoring. Northwestern cut the lead to one at 63-62 with 51.3 second left. Kayla Jacobson made her second free throw of the double bonus attempts giving the lancers a two points advantage. Bre Schuiteman missed a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left and Hannah Williams of Mount Marty responded with two made free throws on the other end to extend the Lancer lead to four points at 66-62. The Red Raiders made a three to cut the lead to one point.

Molly Koisti made a free throw, giving the Lancers the two-point, 67-65 lead. Taylor Vandervelde’s last second 3-pointer was a little too strong, and the Lancers escaped with a win on their home court. The last meeting between these two teams was a 23 point victory for Northwestern. Northwestern shot 23% in the second half of the game.

“I thought we did a better job keeping the ball out of the lane,” Schlimgen said. “We jumped to the ball a little bit better and our five did a good job on their five. We just made them earn things.”

Four Lancers scored in double figures. Jamie Tebben led the Lancers with 18 points. Ali Kuca tallied 14 points and Koisti 14 points with nine rebounds. Hannah Williams tallied a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds.

The Red Raiders had three players in double figures, led by Sammy Blum’s 17 points. Jada Cunningham added 16 points and Schuiteman 13. Alexis Toering had a strong showing on the glass, grabbing 14 rebounds.

The Lancers next match-up is against another ranked opponent. Mount Marty travels to play No. 4 Hastings College on Saturday.
