VERMILLION – The Coyotes set a school record in field goal percentage and eclipse 100 points for the second time this season in a 110-39 victory over Mount Marty College on Wednesday evening.

The Coyotes now have double digit victories on the season, climbing to 10-1. USD ranks 21 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll and is the top team in the receiving votes portion of the AP Top 25 Poll. While the Coyotes earn a win, the game does not count against Mount Marty as it is an exhibition for the Lancers (6-4).

Both teams started the game out hot offensively. The Coyotes shot 64.7% (11-17) in the quarter. Mount Marty on the other hand, shot 66.7% (6-9). Mount Marty was at 50% shooting going into halftime.

“I thought Mount Marty came out and played extremely hard and well,” USD head coach Dawn Plitzuweit said. “They did some things that made us a little bit uncomfortable. I thought we were able to score the ball efficiently, but we weren’t as sharp defensively as we wanted to be.”

The Coyotes scored 57 first half points. Eleven players found playing time and eight of them scored. USD scored 20 points off turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. Mount Marty committed 14 turnovers in the half to just 12 made baskets.

The second half started with the Coyotes breaking the game even more open than it was. Mount Marty committed 15 turnovers in the quarter alone. The Coyote defense allowed the Lancers to put up just six shots.

The Coyote starters were all but finished for the game near the mid-point of the third quarter. From there on the Coyote bench continued the offensive explosion. Three Coyote bench players scored in double-figures. Taylor Frederick led all scorers with 19 points.

“We were just focusing on moving the ball around and we knew that we could get it inside a lot and I think that’s something that we really focused on,” Frederick said. “It helps when people are hitting from the outside. I know Chloe (Lamb) started off the game with two right away.”

Claudia Kunzer scored 12 points and Regan Sankey 10, both players coming off the bench. Thirteen Coyotes played, all of them exceeding a quarter of action. Ciara Duffy played less than 13 minutes and Hannah Sjerven and Monica Arens only played 13 to 14.

“It was really fun, especially with the group of girls at the end,” Sankey said. “We all rally around whole team, so it is fun when the starter get into it.”

USD set a school record in field goal percentage in a game at 66.2% (43-of-65). The Coyotes were five points short of tying the school record in points, and five steals short of the school record in that category.

For the Lancers, they turned the ball over 38 times and scored 39 points for the game. Mount Marty head coach Todd Schlimgen played 14 players in the exhibition. Jamie Tebben was the leading scorer with eight points. Molly Koisti and Peyton Stolle each contributed seven points.

Madison McKeever was the only starter in double figures for USD, scoring 12 points. Duffy tallied eight points, but lead the team with six assists. Jeniah Ugofsky did score a bunch, just two points, but tallied five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

“Overall, we had some very good minutes from a lot of different ladies,” Plitzuweit said. “It really didn’t matter what the group was that we had on the floor. Their energy and intensity was outstanding.”

The Coyotes next game is on Sunday afternoon against Montana. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m.. Mount Marty plays host to the top ranked NAIA school, Concordia University, Saturday at 2 in the afternoon.
