HARTINGTON, Neb. — Hartington Cedar Catholic head track and field coach Chad Cattau talks to his Trojan athletes about peaking at the right time.

With a win in the boys’ division and a runner-up finish in the girls’ division of the District C-4 Meet, Thursday in Hartington, Nebraska, it could be considered the right time.

The Cedar boys scored a 152 to 150 victory over Wakefield for the title. Emerson-Hubbard-Pender won the girls’ title, 119 to 107 over Cedar Catholic, with Ponca third at 104.

“I was impressed with the way our kids stepped up,” Cattau said. “We had a lot of kids that had their best efforts of the year.”

The Cedar boys were led by a trio of victories from Jacob Keiser, the 100 (11.48), 200 (23.44) and triple jump (41-7). Keiser also anchored the Trojans to a runner-up finish in the 400 relay (46.20).

After being shut out of state berths in individual events a year ago, Keiser went into the meet hoping to qualify in at least one of those events. He got that out of the way early by winning the triple jump, an event he had only done one other time this season.

“I broke my foot in football season and played the final four games with it broken. I sat out basketball season to let it heal but, when I did the triple jump in the first meet I rehurt it,” Keiser said. “I thought I had the potential to make state (in the triple jump). It worked out.”

The Trojans qualified six other individuals for state, including victories from Brayden Kathol in the 3200 (10:48.16) and Owen Heimes in the long jump (20-6 1/4). Kathol also helped the Trojans to victory in the 3200 relay (8:31.64).

Cedar Catholic brought home 20 individual medals and finished first or second in all three relays.

“To win a team title takes a full contribution,” Cattau said. “It’s not just the kids that win first, it’s the kids that finish fifth or sixth, the kids that do the best they’ve done all year.”

Joining Keiser in the 200 will be freshman Charlie Schroeder (23.73), who edged out Wakefield’s Justin Erb for second in the finals.

“Charlie was down with 30 meters to go,” Cattau said of the race.

Dagen Joachimsen, who also ran on the winning 3200 relay, was second in the 1600 in 4:57.77. Another 3200 relay member, Matthew Becker, was second in the high jump (5-11) to qualify in that event. Cole Becker was the other member of that relay.

Also for the Cedar boys, Rex Becker was second in the discus with a toss of 142-3.

The Ponca boys finished fourth with 49 points, led by a strong showing from Paul Masin. Masin won the 110 hurdles (16.37), and was second in both the 300 hurdles (43.97) and pole vault (11-4). Teammate Gage McGill won the pole vault, clearing 11-8.

The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys finished fifth with 38 points, led by Cody Babl’s win in the high jump (6-1). Deagan Puppe was second in the 110 hurdles (16.40).

Nick Ronnfeldt of Bancroft-Rosalie-Lyons-Decatur swept the throws, winning the discus with a toss of 145-7 and the shot put with a toss of 55-8.

The Cedar girls were boosted by a big day from sprinter Sara Reifenrath, who won the 100 (12.18), 200 (25.31) and 400 (59.75). She also ran the anchor leg on the Trojans’ winning 1600 relay (4:23.42).

Reifenrath was happy to take care of business, qualifying for events in which she has some of the top times in the state. But having to rally the Trojans to victory in the relay was a challenge, she said.

“I was a little nervous, not getting the baton in first,” she said. “It motivated me. I usually have someone to push me.”

A strong leg by Jayda Bernecker helped put Reifenrath in position to finish the victory. Makenzie Arens and Makenzie Sudbeck opened the relay for the Trojans.

“Jayda definitely ran one of her best legs on the year,” Cattau said. “I told Jayda before she got the baton, ‘Just give us a chance.’ Our first two runners ran good times as well.”

Bernecker and Arens also helped the Trojans win the 3200 relay (10:51.50), joined by Megan Heimes and Sara Burbach. Burbach also qualified for state with runner-up finishes in the 1600 (5:57.72) and 3200 (13:28.57). Bernecker also qualified for state with a runner-up finish in the 800 (2:32.88).

Also for the Trojan girls, Abby Hochstein was second in the shot put (34-11).

Ponca girls won three events, with 1-2 finishes in both the pole vault and discus. In the discus, Meg Keller (118-11) won, with Brooke Languis (116-8) second. Maggie McGill (8-6) won the pole vault, with Addie McGill (7-0) second. Lannguis also won the shot put (38-2).

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge finished fifth with 58 points, led by double-winner Erica Wolfgram in the high jump (4-10) and long jump (15-5 1/2). Vanessa Vance was second in the 100 hurdles (16.91). Kinsey Hall was second in the 300 hurdles (52.69).

Paige Steinman won the 1600 (5:48.53) and 3200 (12:30.95) for girls’ champion EHP. Zoey Lehmkuhl swept the hurdles, winning the 100s in 16.90 and the 300s in 52.01 for the Raptors. Lehmkuhl also helped EHP to victory in the 400 rely (53.59).

Athletes now turn their attention to state, May 17-18 in Omaha. For the Trojan boys, a team title adds to the momentum headed into the final competition of the season.

“I think it helps everyone, especially all the young kids,” Keiser said. “It gives us more confidence as a team because we did so well today.”
