ONIDA – Defending Class 9A Champions Canistota/Freeman will continue their run for back-to-back State Championships after their 56-22 victory over Sully Buttes on Friday in Onida.
Canistota/ Freeman took an early lead on two Tyce Ortman touchdown runs of 27 and 64 yards, respectively, as the defending champions went up 14-0 over Sully Buttes. Sully Buttes would respond with a six-yard touchdown from Nick Wittler but Canistota/Freeman continued to score, going up 42-14 at halftime and then cruising to a 56-22 victory.
Tyce Ortman would finish the night with 185 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries for Canistota/Freeman, while Trey Ortman rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Logan Katzer would also catch four passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns while having six tackles and an interception for Canistota/Freeman, who moves to 10-1 on the year.
As for Sully Buttes, Wittler ran for 121 yards and touchdown on 20 attempts, while Grant Johnson caught eight passes for 109 yards and a touchdown.
Sully Buttes finishes its season with a 10-1 record. Canistota/Freeman will face Britton-Hecla at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings on Thursday at 11 a.m. CT.
