BROOKINGS — Yankton placed fourth in the boys’ race and fifth in the girls’ race of the Eastern South Dakota Conference Cross Country Championships, held on Monday in Brookings.

The meet was scheduled for Saturday in Aberdeen, but was postponed and moved due to poor conditions in Aberdeen.

The Brandon Valley girls and Aberdeen Central boys won team honors.

Brandon Valley scored 46 points, beating out Harrisburg (70), Brookings (72) and Aberdeen Central (75). The Yankton girls were fifth with 115 points.

Brookings’ Ellie Abraham finished the 5,000-meter girls’ race in 18:36.8 to win the league title on her home course, beating out Brandon Valley’s Mia Wentzy (18:53.8). Harrisburg’s Presli White (19:27.8) was third.

For Yankton, Sydnee Serck earned all-ESD honors, placing 13th in 20:37.5. Shea Rumsey (21:25.9) was 23rd, Nora Welker (21:26.8) was 24th, Hailey Solomon (21:34.1) was 25th and Claire Tereshinski (21:37.3) was 30th for the Gazelles.

Aberdeen Central scored 26 points to win the boys’ title, beating out Brandon Valley (54), Harrisburg (70) and Yankton (100). Aberdeen Central’s Aaron Ryan (16:16.9) won the boys’ 5,000-meter race, beating out Brandon Valley’s Britton Elkin (16:23.4) and Aberdeen Central’s Daniel Street (16:53.1).

Yankton was led by Tim Merchen (17:38.9) and Zach Fedde (17:39.7), who finished 15th and 16th. Mason Welker (18:12.9) was 22nd, Nate Schoenfelder (18:17.8) was 26th and Tre Hayes (18:23.9) was 28th to round out the scoring.

Yankton finishes the regular season on Thursday at the Huron Invitational. Yankton’s home JV Invitational, originally scheduled for today (Tuesday), was canceled due to the postponement of the ESD meet.

Yankton’s JV girls finished fourth, led by the 11th place finish of Lizzy Schwartz (18:50.5). The JV Bucks also finished fourth, led by a 22nd place finish of Thomas Lafave (16:03.8).

Yankton was seventh in the middle school girls’ race, led by a 31st place finish from Elizabeth Novak (13:32). The Yankton boys were eighth in the middle school race, led by Keenan Wagner’s (12:06.0) 36th place finish.
