INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — South Dakota volleyball coach Leanne Williamson secured her 100th career win as the Coyotes completed a 3-0 season-opening weekend to win the IUPUI Invitational.
South Dakota posted a pair of wins on Saturday, downing Valparaiso in four sets (25-20, 25-18, 24-26, 25-24) before giving Williamson her 100th win with a three-game sweep (25-19, 25-17, 25-14) over Murray State, a NCAA Tournament team a year ago.
The Coyotes had opened the season on Friday night with a four-set victory over former Summit League rival IUPUI.
Freshman Elizabeth Juhnke was named tournament MVP after posting weekend totals of 52 kills and 34 digs. Also named to the all-tourney team were junior Sami Slaughter and sophomore Madison Jurgens.
South Dakota travels to Ames for a 6:30 p.m. match today (Tuesday) against the Cyclones.
USD 3, VALPARAISO 1: Juhnke had a monster match with 23 kills on only three errors, a .426 hitting percentage, while also adding nine digs and three service aces.
Slaughter tallied 11 kills and Maddie Wiedenfeld nine for a Coyotes team that had a .233 hitting percentage in the win. Wiedenfeld and Madison Harms each recorded seven block assists in the win.
Jurgens contributed 48 assists and 10 digs while Anne Rasmussen had 18 digs and Mehana Fonseca and Lolo Weideman eight apiece.
The Coyotes battled through adversity after falling in set three to come back and finish off the match by scoring the final four points of the match in set four.
USD 3, MURRAY STATE 0: Juhnke had her third double-digit kill outing to begin her collegiate career, recording 17 kills with only three errors and a .412 hitting percentage.
Slaughter added 11 kills while Jurgens chipped in 37 assists as the Coyotes offense had a .317 team hitting percentage.
Fonseca had 12 digs and Rasmussen 10 for the South Dakota defense that also had a combined eight team blocks in the win.
USD 3, IUPUI 1: South Dakota volleyball showed grit and determination in securing a tough four-set season-opening victory over IUPUI on Friday inside The Jungle to begin the iUPUI Invitational.
The Coyotes gutted out a 20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 30-28 win over their former Summit League rivals, including rallying from a 16-8 deficit in the fourth set.
Sami Slaughter had 14 kills, including six in the fourth set, in her first match in a South Dakota uniform. Freshman Elizabeth Juhnke opened her collegiate career with a 12-kill, 17-dig performance while senior Elizabeth Loschen added seven kills, five coming in the decisive fourth set.
Madison Jurgens contributed 36 assists, five kills, eight digs and three of the Coyotes nine service aces in the match. Anne Rasmussen had 14 digs while Lolo Weideman added 10 digs and three service aces.

OSKALOOSA, Iowa — Mount Marty College went 3-1 in the William Penn volleyball tournament, held Saturday and Sunday in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
The Lancers, 4-5, returns home Wednesday to open Great Plains Athletic Conference play against Briar Cliff. Start time is 7:30 p.m.
MMC 3, ROBERT MORRIS-ILL. 0: Freshman Gabby Ruth finished with 10 kills to lead Mount Marty past Robert Morris (Ill.) 25-19, 25-23, 25-13 on Sunday afternoon.
Elizabeth Watchorn, Mikaela Ahrendt and Alex Ruth each had five kills for MMC. Ahrendt had three assisted blocks. Watchorn posted 13 digs and two ace serves.
Also for MMC, Amber Miller posted 23 assists and Hannah Harberts had three ace serves.
Kaila Beckwthi had eight kills and Taelor Done had 26 assists for Robert Morris.
MMC 3, GRACELAND 1: Mount Marty had double-digit kills from Elizabeth Watchorn and Mikaela Ahrendt in a 25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 25-15 victory over Graceland (Iowa) on Sunday.
Watchorn posted 12 kills, three ace serves and 13 digs, and Ahrendt had 10 kills and four blocks (one solo) for MMC. Gabby Ruth posted seven kills. Amber Miller had 27 assists. Molly Brinkman added 13 digs for the Lancers.
Emma Runyan led Graceland with 24 kills. Shianne Cooke posted 12 kills. Sam Schell had 22 assists and 10 digs in the effort.
SAINT MARY 3, MMC 0: University of Saint Mary (Kansas) blanked Mount Marty 25-15, 25-20, 25-19 on Saturday afternoon.
Jessica Malizzi and Cali Odom each had six kills for St. Mary. Haydan Heuermann added 12 assists.
For MMC, Gabby Ruth had eight kills, and Elizabeth Watchorn and Mikaela Ahrendt had five kills each to lead the way. Amber Miller posted 22 assists and two ace serves.
MMC 3, AVILA 2: Mount Marty rallied past Avila (Missouri) 23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-13 to open action on Saturday.
Elizabeth Watchorn and Mikaela Ahrendt each had 17 kills, with Watchorn recording 27 digs and three ace serves to lead MMC. Gabby Ruth posted 10 kills and 13 digs. Amber Miller had 45 assists, two ace serves and 12 digs. Alex Ruth had nine kills and three assisted blocks. Molly Brinkman added 17 digs.
Katelyn Payan led Avila with nine kills. Chloe Brundick had 12 assists and 14 digs.
