Sioux Falls East jumped out to an early lead, then answered each Yankton rally to claim a 5-3 victory over Post 12 in American Legion Baseball action on Monday at Riverside Field at Bob Tereshinski Stadium.

The setback was the first in Region 2A competition for Yankton (22-13), which has lost four straight.

Nick Kemper went 3-3 with two doubles and two RBI for East (27-21). Garrett Winblade had two hits. Alex Bertram, Brandon Ford, Tada Naoe, Michael Hedeen and Mitchell Tolk each had a hit in the victory.

For Yankton, Ethan Wishon doubled, and Bailey Sage had a hit and two RBI. Collin Zahrbock, Matthew Mors, Michael Drotzmann and Owen Feser each had a hit.

Levi Wiersma took the loss, striking out five in his 6 1/3 innings of work.

East takes on crosstown rival Sioux Falls West today (Tuesday) at 7 p.m. Yankton, which has clinched the top seed in the Region 2A Tournament with a 6-1 region record, finishes Region 2A play tonight (Tuesday) against Brandon Valley. Start time for the single game is 6 p.m.

Brookings 6, Yankton Juniors 5

BROOKINGS — Brookings scored in the bottom of the eighth to claim a 6-5 victory over Yankton in American Legion Juniors baseball action on Monday.

Cameron Zahrbock went 2-4 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored for Yankton. Trevor Fitzgerald also had two hits and two runs scored. Matt Hein and Tony McGlone each had a hit, with McGlone, Austin Wagner and Jayden Lightner each driving in a run in the effort.

Kaden Luellman took the loss in relief.

Yankton, 11-18, travels to Sioux Falls East Americans on Wednesday. Start time for the twinbill is 5 p.m.

Dakota Valley 3, Ponca 1

PONCA, Neb. — Dakota Valley crossed the border to claim a 3-1 victory over Ponca, Nebraska, in American Legion Seniors baseball action on Monday.

Jake Likness and Eric Johnson each had two hits for Dakota Valley. Ethan Redmond doubled. Samuel Otten, Drew Addison and Keaton Hensley each had a hit in the win.

Matt Logue had the lone Ponca hit.

Nathan Rice went the distance in the win, striking out 11. Logue took the loss, striking out eight in his six innings of work.

Dakota Valley, 10-8, hosts Beresford on Wednesday. Ponca, 10-10, travels to Plainview on Wednesday.

West Central 6, McCook-Miner 4

HUMBOLDT — West Central scored four runs in the first inning, then held on for a 6-4 victory over McCook-Miner in American Legion baseball action on Monday.

Broc Haldeman went 2-3 with a double and two RBI for West Central. Devin Garry went 2-3 with a double and two runs scored. Cooper Maras also went 2-3 with two RBI. Clay Habben added a hit in the win.

Jackson Fiegen went 2-3 with a double and three RBI for McCook-Miner. Kyle Tuschen also doubled. Kalub Carmichael and Isaac Feldhaus each had a hit in the effort.

Habben picked up the win. Sam Gillespie took the loss.

West Central, 12-7, travels to Garretson on Wednesday. McCook-Miner, 13-5, hosts Parkston today (Tuesday) in Canova.
