Yankton Post 12 has clinched the top seed in the Region 2A American Legion baseball tournament, thanks to a 5-4 victory in the first game of a doubleheader with Sioux Falls West on Tuesday at Riverside Field at Bob Tereshinski Stadium.

The victory moved Yankton to 6-0 in region play, as the first game in region doubleheaders are counted toward standings. West moved to 4-2 in region play, with both losses coming against Yankton. Yankton hosts the Region 2A Tournament July 19-21.

Yankton clinched the victory in a back-and-forth opener thanks to an error on a bases-loaded play in the bottom of the seventh.

Matthew Mors had a triple and two RBI for Yankton. Michael Drotzmann, whose ground ball was misplayed to plate the game-winning run, and Bailey Sage each doubled. Collin Zahrbock and Rex Ryken each had a hit in the victory.

Mason Crow went 4-4 with a double for West. Karsten Grove had three hits and two RBI. Joe Lund went 2-3 with a triple. John Rogers, Aidan Thomas and Mason Ohnstad each had a hit in the effort.

Miles Carda, who got the final two outs of the seventh in relief of Kieren Luellman, picked up the win. Crow went the distance in the loss, striking out five.

Yankton completed the sweep with a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.

Caid Koletzky went 3-3, and Drotzmann went 2-4 with a go-ahead three-run home run for Yankton. Ethan Wishon also had two hits. Mors doubled, and Carda and Sage each had a hit in the win.

Joe Lund, Grady Gulbranson, Connor Rysavy and Keaton Hartman each had a hit for West.

Sam Mooney, who stuck out three in three innings of relief, picked up the win. Carda pitched a scoreless seventh for the save. Dylan Ades took the loss in relief of Grove, who struck out five in his four innings of work.

Yankton, 22-9, heads west for three games against Rapid City Post 22, the first regular season meeting between the programs in several years. The teams will play twice on Saturday and once on Sunday.

Tabor 10, Crofton 3

CROFTON, Neb. — Tabor crossed the border to claim a 10-3 victory over Crofton in American Legion baseball action on Tuesday.

Christian Uecker went 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored for Tabor (11-6). Riley Rothschadl doubled and singled. Josh Schmidt had two hits and two RBI. Joey Slama had two hits and two runs scored. Tanner Van Driel and Kaden Kozak each had a hit in the win.

Van Driel pitched four innings, striking out eight, for the win.

Elk Point-Jefferson 5, Vermillion 1

VERMILLION — Elk Point-Jefferson’s Tyler Goehring and Tyler Leif combined on a two-hitter in a 5-1 victory over Vermillion in American Legion baseball action on Tuesday.

Leif went 3-4 and Nearman doubled twice to lead EPJ. Tyler Goehring also had two hits. Preston Fejfar homered, and Hunter Goehring, Myles Herrity and Skylar Swatek each had a hit in the victory.

Jacob Chaussee doubled and Connor Saunders singled for Vermillion.

Tyler Goehring struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings of work for the win. Leif faced two batters, retiring both and striking out one. Sammy Ward took the loss.

EPJ, 3-6, hosts South Sioux City, Nebraska, on July 8. Vermillion, 9-9, travels to Wakefield, Nebraska on July 9.

Garretson 12, West Central 5

HUMBOLDT — Garretson took advantage of five West Central errors and 13 walks in a 12-5 decision in American Legion baseball action on Tuesday.

Drew Blosmo had two hits and three runs scored to lead Garretson. Savonne Grotwald had a hit and three RBI. Trey Buckenberg, Braydon Carmody and Cole Skaddsen each had a hit. Lucas Fitzgerald scored three times in the win.

Clayton Hanisch went 2-2 for West Central. Devin Garry, Broc Haldeman, Clay Habben, Carter Healy, Micah Warrington and Kaden Nolz each had a hit.

Buckneberg pitched five innings of shutout ball, striking out four, for the win. Healy took the loss.

Garretson, 5-2, hosts Alexandria on Sunday. West Central, 11-5, hosts Mitchell in a doubleheader on Sunday.
