BROOKINGS — A good start for the Yankton Tappers was stopped short on Friday, with the Tappers’ first-round matchup against Castlewood in the South Dakota State Class A Amateur Baseball Tournament being suspended due to rain.

The game will resume in the top of the sixth, with Yankton leading 6-2. Play is scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. today (Saturday). Both teams will play a second game today, against either Brookings or the Sioux Falls Squirrels. The losers will play at 1 p.m., with the winners playing at 3:30 p.m.

Mitch Gullikson is 2-2, and Gabe Leon, Alex Mueller and Derrik Nelson each have a double for the Tappers.

Blake Turbak is 2-2 for Castlewood, with Andy Turbak recording a double.

Luke Bauske got the start for Yankton, striking out five through his five innings of work. Conner Fransen is pitching for Castlewood, also recording five strikeouts.

Teams that win at least one of their two games in Brookings will move on to the Mitchell portion of the tournament, Aug. 16-18.

Class B

Mount Vernon 4, Larchwood 3

MITCHELL — The Mount Vernon Mustangs scored three runs in the top of the ninth to claim a 4-3 victory over Larchwood in the first round of the South Dakota State Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament on Friday at Mitchell’s Cadwell Park.

Mount Vernon advances to face Milbank in the 7:30 p.m. game on Monday.

Cameron Deinert went 2-4 with a two-run go-ahead double in the ninth, finishing with three RBI for Mount Vernon. Eric Giblin had two doubles and two runs scored. Bradley Dean and Chase Hetland each had a hit in the victory.

Mitch Peschon had two hits, and Micah Linn, Brent Ripperda, Keaton Grevengoed each doubled for Larchwood, which outhit the Mustangs 9-6. Chase Vanderfeen, Scott Erickson, James Van Beek and Jaden Snyder each had a hit in the effort.

Former Mount Marty pitcher Deric Denning struck out six batters over 8 1/3 innings for the win. Luke Tiesler got the final two outs for the save. Trent Roose took the loss, striking out nine in 8 2/3 innings of work.

Milbank 5, Chamberlain 1

MITCHELL — Milbank’s Taylor Boerger tossed a complete game three-hitter as the Firechiefs downed Chamberlain 5-1 in the first round of the South Dakota State Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament on Friday at Mitchell’s Cadwell Park.

Milbank advances to face Mount Vernon in the 7:30 p.m. game on Monday.

Travis Lester went 3-4 with a triple and a double for Milbank. Jonny Ash had two hits. Brady Krause posted a hit and two RBI. Jesse Krause, Dom Boerger, Jacob Jackson and Cole Gross each had a hit in the win.

Jake Byre, Evan Fleury and Mike Schwartz each had a hit for Chamberlain.

Taylor Boerger struck out eight in the victory. Schwartz took the loss.

Alexandria 11, Lake Norden 1

MITCHELL — Alexandria’s Ethan Davis tossed a complete game three-hitter as the Angels rolled past Lake Norden 11-1 in seven innings in the first round of the South Dakota State Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament on Thursday at Mitchell’s Cadwell Park.

Alexandria advances to face Tabor in the 5:30 p.m. game on Monday.

Jordan Gau went 3-3 with a triple, a double, two RBI and two runs scored for Alexandria. Cole Wenande went 3-5 with a triple, a double and three runs scored. John Greicar had two hits and three RBI. Peyton Smith had a hit and two runs scored. Tyson Gau, Chris Marek, Matt Wilber, Pierce Smith and Jarrod Zens each had a hit in the victory.

Jesse Van Overbeke doubled for Lake Norden. Asa Stiles and Mick Tulson each had a hit.

Davis struck out 12 in the victory. Nathan Wicks took the loss.
