MITCHELL — The Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels built a 5-1 lead and held on for a 6-5 victory over the Sturgis A’s in an elimination game in the South Dakota State Class A Amateur Baseball Tournament on Friday at Mitchell’s Drake Field.

Seth Bjordahl went 3-5 to lead Sioux Falls, which will face defending champion Renner in an elimination game today (Saturday) at 11 a.m. The winner of the 11 a.m. game will face the Sioux Falls Brewers at 5:30 p.m., with the winner of that game facing Yankton in the championship on Sunday at noon.

Also for the Flying Squirrels, Tyler Fields doubled twice. Seth Peterson and Damon Baruth each had two hits. Jaden Holzer homered. Austin Serck and Reece Mimmack each had a hit in the victory.

Tyson Lindekugel doubled and singled, driving in two, for Sturgis. Dawson Penticoff also had two hits. Jesse Kurtenbach homered, Zac Smith doubled, and Cody Schulze added a hit in the effort.

Serck pitched 8 1/3 innings, striking out six, for the win. Peterson got the final two outs for the save. Smith took the loss, striking out six in his five innings of work.

Renner 12, Brookings 2

MITCHELL — The defending champion Renner Monarchs took control with a seven-run fifth inning on the way to a 12-2 victory over Brookings Cubby’s in an elimination game in the South Dakota State Class A Amateur Baseball Tournament on Friday at Mitchell’s Drake Field.

Erik DeJong doubled and singled, and Chaz Palmer had two hits for Renner, which will face the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels today (Saturday) at 11 a.m. David Borchardt homered, driving in three. Grant Hieb and Edward Reichenbach each doubled. Brian McGuire, Corey Vasquez and Tim Huber each had a hit in the effort.

Todd Standish doubled and singled for Brookings. Jared Tschetter, Kyle Krogman and Austin Koenig each had a hit.

Kris Regas pitched five shutout innings, striking out six, for the win. Marcus Heemstra took the loss.

Class B

Garretson 15, Clark 0

MITCHELL — The Garretson Blue Jays pounded out 15 hits in a five-inning contest, rolling past the Clark Traders 15-0 in the quarterfinals of the South Dakota State Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament on Friday at Mitchell’s Cadwell Park.

The victory sends Garretson to the 7:30 p.m. semifinal tonight (Saturday).

Nick Bonte went 3-4 with a double and three RBI, and Derek Fischer went 3-3 for Garretson. Scott Splett went 2-3 with a triple and four RBI. Jesse Brockhouse went 2-4 with a triple and two RBI. Brad Ulmer doubled and singled, scoring three times. Austin Van Hove homered. Nick Bruning had a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Brady Bonte added a hit in the victory.

Andrew Magedanz had two of Clark’s four hits. Brent Griffith and Josh Nelson each had a hit.

Nick Bonte went the distance in the win. Zach Toben took the loss.
