BROOKINGS — The Yankton Tappers improved to 2-0 in the South Dakota State Class A Amateur Baseball Tournament with a 12-1 rout of the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels on Saturday in Brookings.
Yankton will play the 1 p.m. game at Mitchell’s Cadwell Park on Friday, Aug. 16. The Squirrels will play the 3:30 p.m. game at Drake Field that day.
Derrik Nelson went 4-5 with three RBI, and Devin Gullikson went 3-5 with two RBI for Yankton. Gabe Leon, Mason Townsend and Alex Mueller each had two hits, with Leon driving in two and Mueller scoring twice. Mitch Gullikson had a hit and four runs scored, Mack Hollingsworth had a hit and three runs scored, and Nik Davis added a hit in the victoyr.
Jaden Holzer and Trevor Hurley each had a hit for Sioux Falls.
Billy Mount, a pickup player from Vermillion, went the distance in the win, striking out eight in the eight-inning contest. Alejandro Cortina took the loss.
Yankton 7, Castlewood 2
BROOKINGS — The Yankton Tappers avenged a season-ending loss to Castlewood from the 2018 state tournament, beating the Ravens in the first round of the South Dakota State Class A Amateur Baseball Tournament on Saturday in Brookings.
The game started on Friday night, but was suspended until Saturday morning due to rain.
Mitch Gullikson went 3-3 with three runs scored, and Mason Townsend doubled and singled for Yankton. Gabe Leon, Alex Mueller and Derrik Nelson each doubled, with Leon driving in three runs and Nelson driving in two. Ross Heine added a hit in the win.
Blake Turbak went 3-3 with a double for Castlewood. Jacob Lamoreaux had two hits. Andy Turbak also doubled. Eric Danforth and Ben DeVille each had a hit in the effort.
Luke Bauske pitched five innings, striking out five, for the win. Mack Hollingsworth pitched four innings of shutout relief, striking out three, for the save. Conner Fransen took the loss.
