December 9, 1955-May 28, 2019

Richard Edwin Davies, born December 9, 1955, to Martha Elizabeth (Swenson) Davies and John Milton Davies in Mitchell, South Dakota, died on May 28, 2019. He will be remembered for his love of farm life and animals. Rich noted the wide open space, the responsibility, and the chores were often the most relaxing part of the day after a long day at work.

Rich saw many advances in technology during his long career as a production planner. He graduated with a degree in production and operations management from the University of Arizona in 1979. He obtained part of his education at Springfield Junior College in Springfield, South Dakota, as well. He graduated from Tyndall High School in Tyndall, South Dakota, in 1974, where he was on the football, track, and wrestling teams and was Student Council President during his senior year.

His first job after graduating from the University of Arizona was at CR Industries in Elgin, Illinois. He later worked for Ray Corporation in McHenry, Illinois, to plan the production of electronic and gear motors. Then he worked at Textron Marine Systems in New Orleans, Louisiana. His favorite project there was the LCAC Hovercraft. After that he worked for Raytheon in Forest, Mississippi, on projects including torpedo guidance systems. Finally, he worked for Boeing in Huntsville, Alabama, including various projects for the International Space Station and an extended assignment on a border security initiative in Arizona. Rich retired in 2013.

Richard married Kristine May Miller of Springfield, South Dakota, in 1976. Their son, Zachary Sundance, was born in 1977. Their daughter, Jill Kristine, was born in 1981. Rich and Kris divorced in 1993.

Rich died after a short battle with bone marrow cancer. The prognosis was short enough to be shocking, but long enough to allow his friends and family to relay messages of love and peace, and for several friends and for his children and grandchildren to visit and say goodbye.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and a stillborn brother, Stephen Alan Davies. He is survived by his siblings James Robert Davies, John Gelbert Davies, Daniel Eugene Davies, and Rebecca Ann Larsen, his children, their spouses, and their children, Zachary, Gabriel, and Alex Davies and Jill, Eric, Sage, and Evan Macchiaverna, and his longtime friend Janella Butner and her daughter, Daniele Butner.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Richard’s home in Lacey’s Spring, Alabama, on June 15. (
