Vada Maida Raker entered this world on August 17, 1931, to Rudolph and Adina Sunderman on a farm near Kaylor SD. Vada attended Kaylor Country School until the 4th grade when they moved to Scotland area. She attended and graduated from Scotland High School in 1949. Vada met the love of her life, Herbert Raker and they were united in marriage on August 28, 1949. Herb & Vada lived and farmed in Emery SD, until moving to the Scotland area, where they continued to farm until moving into town until 1971. Together they raised five children: Neta, Mike, Cindy, Nancy, and Mark. Vada worked at different jobs until going to work at Human Services Center, where she retired after 25 years.

Vada loved surrounding herself with her family. She enjoyed cheering them on at different sporting events and on occasion had to be reminded, "it’s only a game, mom."

Vada was known for her excellent cooking and somehow managed to plan and cook enough for everyone because it was always a guess as to how many would be eating at the Raker table, as everyone was always welcome. In fact, it was a joke that we never left the table before planning our next meal.

Vada was an active member in the VFW Auxiliary for over 50 years holding various officer positions on the local and district level, as well as St Paul’s Lutheran Church, teaching many Sunday School classes.

Vada passed away on Monday, July 8th, 2019, at the age of 87 years and 11 months.

Vada is survived by her five children: Neta (Turk) Peturka of Scotland; Mike Raker of Scotland, Cindy (Robert) Kvick of Sacramento CA, Nancy (Jeff) King of Oxford IA, and Mark (special friend Jinjer) of Scotland.

Vada is the loving grandmother of 10 grandchildren: Justin Halverson, Heather Jenkins, Heidi Jenkins, Robert Raker, Kyle Kvick, Niki (Wayne) Klein, Erin Ramsey, Chelsea( Andrew) Stracke, Lindsey ( special friend Brandon) and Paige Raker. 3 Great Grandchildren: Savanna Jenkins, Leaha Jenkins, Atley Stracke, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vada is preceded in death by her husband Herbert, her parents, one brother, and one sister.
