PIERRE — The South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC), on behalf of the beef checkoff, provided educational opportunities and resources to future food and nutrition professionals through South Dakota State Universities’ (SDSU) Nutrition & Dietetic Internship Program. Media training became the focus in July as a partnership with the SDSU dietetic internship program was expanded to provide a beef focused media-training workshop.
Prior to the training students listened to presentations and reviewed beef nutrition research and information. This helped students become more familiar with current science revolving around beef nutrition and prepared them for the in-person media training. This educational workshop provides interns the opportunity to meet competency standards by gaining media training skills utilizing beef as the discussion platform.
“Our consumers are becoming more removed from production agriculture so it’s important to help our future nutrition professionals, who will get asked questions about food and health in the future, be equipped with the most current and accurate evidence-based information,” states Holly Swee, SDBIC’s Director of Nutrition.
Ryan Goodman, Director, Spokesperson Development at National Cattlemen’s Beef Association conducted the media training via webinar. Additional communication and food and nutrition professionals helped assist in the training which included Madison Hokanson from Cannon Falls, Minnesota, and Amanda Lambrechts, MS, RD, LN from Sioux Falls.
This educational workshop assists the future food and nutrition professionals in finding credible resources when it comes to beef and practice critical thinking skills to ultimately help dispel misinformation.
