Five Yankton athletes took part with close to 250 other lifters from around the state in the 2023 South Dakota AA State Powerlifting Meet Saturday, March 11, at Sioux Falls Washington High School, the host site for this year’s event. The lifters were, from left: Connor Slaba in the 132-pound weight class, Fred Nelson in the 242-pound class, Ben Hebda, in the 181-pound division, Devon Coke in the 123-pound class and Joshua Stapish in the 198-pound weight division. Slaba and Coke placed second in their division and Nelson medaled with a fifth-place finish. All the lifters improved their past performance from the Yankton Powerlifting meet, where they qualified for the state meet. Three lifts — the squat, bench press and deadlift — are performed and the total amount of weight lifted is recorded, and the top five lifters in each weight division are recognized.
