Statue “Spirit of Discovery”

A couple of familiar faces have returned to the Yankton cityscape. The statue “Spirit of Discovery,” depicting explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, has been erected at the city’s new water treatment plant. The statue, created by Sioux City, Iowa, artist Steve Kammerer, was first brought to Yankton in 2002 and was displayed in front of the former Lewis & Clark Specialty Hospital. When Avera Sacred Heart Hospital purchased the specialty hospital, Avera presented the sculpture to the city, and the work has now been placed at the water plant. It is on the east side of the plant, facing southeast down the Missouri River.
