Fowl Weather

Area bird enthusiasts have been treated to a rare visitor at Yankton’s Westside Park pond as a Mandarin duck (foreground) has taken up residence the past few days. Here, the bird is shown swimming with one of the other denizens of the small lake. People took advantage of the weekend’s record warmth to see the visitor. (Yankton Parks and Recreation has announced it is conducting an online contest to name the colorful visitor.) After setting a record maximum temperature (81) on Friday, Yankton saw record warm minimum temperatures on Friday (55 degrees/old mark: 53 in 1934), Saturday (59/old mark: 52 in 1977) and Sunday (58/old mark: 49 in 1977). But all came crashing down Monday morning as temperatures fell into the 30s by sunrise, accompanied by rain mixed with light sleet and snow. The Yankton airport received .47 of precipitation, marking the biggest one-day moisture total recorded since July 7. The area is under a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. tonight (Tuesday).
