A local marketing firm is set to close its doors by the end of the year.
After 18 years of operation, Plains Marketing is having its operations moved elsewhere.
According to a statement from Plains Midstream Canada, which owns Plains Marketing, the move is about consolidating operations to offices in Calgary, Alberta, and Houston.
"Our business has grown substantially over the past 18 years but we need to continue to evolve," the statement read. "It is our belief that these changes will result in services that are better structured and optimal for suppliers and customers, and allow us to maintain a strong North American presence as producers, buyers and sellers of propane."
Plains Marketing employs around 30 people and has operated in Yankton since 2001.
There is no firm date for ending local operations, but the statement says plans are to bring it to a close by the end of the year. Employees have been notified of the impending cessation of operations.
The emailed statement concluded by acknowledging the company’s history with the people of Yankton and said Plains Midstream Canada is helping those employees carry on.
"Plains sincerely appreciates the effort and dedication from all our employees at our Yankton, South Dakota, location over the years," the statement said. "We will continue to support these employees until the end of 2019 as we finalize the office closure and will work to connect those impacted with local agencies, such as the South Dakota Department of Labor and Yankton Area Progressive Growth, as they explore new opportunities locally."
