SUNDAY, APRIL 28

12:04 p.m. — A caller reported a vehicle parked in a field approach south of Meckling. Contact was made with the registered owner who had sold the vehicle but he agreed to make sure the new owner was contacted and the vehicle was removed.

5:38 p.m. — A deputy assisted a Vermillion police officer by locating a vehicle suspected to have been involved in a hit and run in Vermillion. The vehicle was located and was not damaged and did not appear to have been involved.

MONDAY, APRIL 29

12:52 p.m. — A deputy responded to a report of a dispute at a rural residence. The matter was resolved after visiting with all parties about alcohol treatment options.

2:19 p.m. — A wanted person was transported from the Minnehaha County Jail in Sioux Falls to be held at the Clay County Jail.

4:00 p.m. — A deputy investigated a report that an inmate in the jail stole items from another inmate. Charges are under consideration by the State’s Attorney’s Office.

TUESDAY, APRIL 30

3:00 a.m. — A deputy investigated a report of a theft from a vehicle at a rural residence. The theft report was made after a verbal dispute between two men and one suspected the other of removing items from his vehicle.

8:31 a.m. — A deputy responded to a report from a man who had become stuck in the mud on a rural gravel road. The man reported that his GPS device routed him to that road. The man was driven to his nearby destination after tow services reported being unable to get the vehicle out due to the road conditions.

2:15 p.m. — A deputy observed a vehicle driving suspiciously in the Vermillion High School parking lot, apparently observing the parked vehicles. The vehicle was stopped by the deputy and the occupants were determined not to be Vermillion High School students and had no business at the school. The driver was cited for no insurance on the vehicle.

2:18 p.m. — A deputy responded to a report of a medical emergency at the Vermillion High School and assisted the patient until the arrival of EMS.

2:35 p.m. — A deputy traveled to the Charles Mix County Jail to transport a wanted person from there to the Clay County Jail. On the trip back, a second inmate was picked up at the Yankton County Jail and he was also transported to the Clay County Jail.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 1

12:18 p.m. — A wanted person was transported from the Minnehaha County Jail to the Clay County Jail.

3:11 p.m. — A recently received inmate in the jail was experiencing alcohol detox issues which caused staff to be concerned for his welfare. A deputy transported the man to the hospital and remained with him during medical treatment and then the man was returned to the jail.

6:03 p.m. — A wanted person was transported from the Yankton County Jail to the Clay County Jail.

6:20 p.m. — A Burbank resident called with concern about a neighbor who hadn’t been seen for many weeks. A deputy responded and checked the home and found that no one was home or had been there for a long time. No indications of any crime were found.

10:15 p.m. — An Irene resident called to report he thought some men walking near his residence looked suspicious. No crime was alleged. A deputy responded but did not see the men as described and did not observe any criminal activity.

10:57 p.m. — A deputy responded to assist a Highway Patrol Trooper with a vehicle pursuit that resulted in a crash in Yankton County. Once assistance was no longer needed, the deputy returned to Clay County.

THURSDAY, MAY 2

2:34 p.m. — A deputy responded to a rural residence after an employer called with concern about an employee who had been sick. The employee was not home and there was no apparent cause for concern found at the residence.

7:08 p.m. — An inmate was transported from the Clay County Jail to the Yankton County Jail to meet a prisoner transport shuttle.

10:57 p.m. — A deputy responded to a report of a domestic assault at a rural residence. One person was arrested and was transported to the jail.

FRIDAY, MAY 3

10:14 a.m. — A vehicle was stopped and the driver was cited for speeding on Main Street in Irene.

5:39 p.m. — Sheriff’s units and a Highway Patrol Trooper responded along with Fire and EMS units to a motorcycle crash on Burbank Road. One person was injured and was transported from the scene by ambulance.

SATURDAY, MAY 4

3:03 a.m. — Callers reported that a vehicle was in a ditch near Gayville with an intoxicated man in the driver’s seat. A deputy arrived and found that the vehicle was unoccupied. The vehicle was towed and impounded. The vehicle’s owner was located later in the day and he was determined to have been the driver. He was cited for hit and run with property damage.

9:57 a.m. — A deputy encountered a man on Bluff Road who was stopped to adjust his ATV strapped on his trailer. The deputy assisted the man so he could continue on his way.

10:52 a.m. — A caller reported children riding ATVs on the streets in Irene. A deputy responded and located the children who were too young to operate the vehicles, which were also not properly licensed for use on the road. The children’s parents were not home. Later, the parents were contacted and were informed of the several traffic violations that had occurred and were warned that in the future, the parents and children will be cited if the behavior continues.

3:24 p.m. — A caller reported that a vehicle had circumvented a traffic sign placed to close the road on 309th St at University Road. The driver was located on the closed road and was cited for the offense.

8:50 p.m. — A deputy was approached by a large group of people in Vermillion reporting a verbal dispute among two groups and threats made. A Vermillion Police officer responded to assist with the incident. One person was cited for disorderly conduct.

9:29 p.m. — A deputy investigated a car/deer crash that had occurred on Highway 19 north of Vermillion.
