One person was arrested Friday night following an incident on the Meridian Bridge.
As the Riverboat Days fireworks show began, authorities became aware of a man who had climbed his way to the top of the long-disused north lift tower on the bridge.
Yankton deputy fire chief Larry Nickles told the Press & Dakotan that no special actions had to be taken to get the person down.
"Once the fireworks had subsided, we were able to talk to him," Nickles said. "He actually crawled down on his own and was taken into custody by the police department."
The Yankton Fire Department and Yankton County Search & Rescue were all called in to be on standby.
Attempts to get further details on the suspect were unsuccessful as of press time Sunday evening, but a Yankton Police Department tweet on the incident announced that the individual was arrested for disorderly conduct and that no injuries were reported.
Nickles said this isn’t the first time that this has happened on one of the old lift towers.
"We had an incident at that bridge, but it was still open, where a guy jumped off from the top of that same tower," he said. "That wound up in a fatality."
As for Friday’s incident, he said it went largely unnoticed to those who were taking in the pyrotechnics.
"Most of the people were watching the fireworks and didn’t even know that it happened," he said.
