A state prison walkaway from the Yankton Community Work Center is back in custody.

According to a release from the South Dakota Department of Corrections, Richard Barela was apprehended by law enforcement in Pierre Tuesday.

Barela had been on escape status since leaving his community work service site in Yankton Jan. 3. He took a 2007 silver Chevy half-ton pickup with a State of South Dakota license plate from the work site. The vehicle was later recovered in Pierre.

He was serving a 10-year sentence with 4 years suspended for possession of a controlled substance out of Hughes County.
