With a taste of warmer weather, we are looking forward to spring and new beginnings at YCL. We are always striving to add new and improved services and features at our library.
For instance, we have added some new items to our collections that we can’t wait for you to try. Wonderbooks are new to our youth collection. They are picture books and chapter books with a built-in audio feature. You can listen to the book directly from the speaker on the book or by using earbuds as you follow along with the words on the page. Does anyone else have fond memories of checking out audio books from the library in the plastic hanging bags with the cassettes and books inside? It was so fun to get these audiobooks and I’m excited to see the next generation experience the joy as well! Wonderbooks can be charged with a typical phone charger, so there will be no need to constantly replace batteries. There is even a feature on the audio to test the reader’s comprehension with questions about the book. Not only can listening to a book while following along with the words help improve a reader’s confidence and vocabulary, it can also be used as a tool for those learning the English language!
Another addition to our collection is two science backpacks that patrons can check out. Each backpack contains a telescope, a coding mouse, a planisphere to help you identify constellations and books about space to be shared with your family. These backpacks will be fun and interactive opportunities to learn about space in new and interesting ways. We received these kits through the NASA @ My Library grant.
Spring also tends to be a time to thoroughly clean your home and to get rid of things you no longer need or want. The Friends of the Library will be holding their next quarterly book sale on April 2-4 and they would love to accept your donations of gently used books (no textbooks, please!) to add to their sale. You can drop donated books off at the library any time during business hours. Then get ready to shop and refill your bookshelves in April!
Beginning in January, the library offered another new program: “An Afternoon of Hygge.” Hygge is the Danish art of coziness and relaxation. The library offered a cozy space in the meeting room with coloring, puzzles, refreshments and conversation. This event was well-received and a nice way to spend a cold winter afternoon. Our final Hygge event for this winter will be on Sunday, March 22 from 1-4:30 p.m. Take some time to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life at this event.
Though not a new program, our Oscars Movie Marathon weekends continue to be a big hit. In February, we had over 100 people attend the showings of four Oscar nominated movies! We will do an Encore Oscars Movie Marathon Weekend on Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8, with four additional Oscar-nominated movies! Join us for another weekend of movies. Light refreshments will be provided and feel free to bring your own favorite movie snacks!
The library can be a lot of different things to many different people. It can be exposure to new materials and a new way to learn. It can be a cozy place to gather with family and friends to relax and enjoy each other’s company. And it can be a place to watch a popular film or check out old classics. Libraries are multi-faceted, ever-changing entities that strive to be priceless assets to their communities-and Yankton Community Library is no different! We hope you stop in the library soon to see what’s new!
