Libraries offer so much to love … we need a whole month to celebrate!

Libraries are priceless resources to their users and the communities they inhabit. You can find your next great read (either on the shelves or on your smartphone or tablet), you can attend programs to learn something new, and you can access countless resources through online databases. The public computers and free Wi-Fi are used daily to fill out job applications, stay connected with family and friends, research a topic of interest or just provide some entertainment. Yankton Community Library has printers, scanners, fax machines, microform machines and even a notary available to the public. In addition, our Children’s department will soon be launching two new resources for checkout: books with a built-in audio component called Wonderbooks and Science backpacks that contain a telescope, a planisphere to help identify constellations, a coding mouse and more! Another priceless resource our library offers…its staff. Our library has a full staff of friendly and helpful individuals that are willing to help you find what you are looking for. We have a wonderful group of dedicated staff that love what they do!

For those that say that libraries are no longer needed or are going out of style … I would argue that libraries are needed now more than ever! Libraries help to bridge the technology and information gap for those that cannot afford or do not have access to technology. Libraries offer a variety of programs and a space to feel more connected to your community.

For example, at the end of January, the library hosted a Hygge event. Hygge is the Danish art of coziness and togetherness. We had a significant number of people meet at the library just to spend time with others and enjoy some of the simple things in life — without being expected to spend any money.

The library also offers countless free programs for children age birth through teen. Not only are these programs beneficial to the youth’s cognitive and social development, but also allow an opportunity for parents to meet and interact as well.

Celebrate National Library Lover’s month this February by using your community library. Check out some good books, participate in a program, or ask us how to download an e-book. We are always open to taking suggestions on books, resources or programs that you’d like to see the library offer-so bring us your ideas, too!

If you want to further show your love for Yankton Community Library, you can become a member of the Friends of the Yankton Community Library. Your membership fee (only $10 for individuals) and proceeds from the Friends’ quarterly book sales help to support the library in making purchases not covered by our regular budget. Some recent contributions from our Friends include two new comfy reading chairs, a kit that include tools for making special cardboard creations and the ever-popular play kitchen set in our children’s area. We are thankful for our Friends and we are thankful for all of our devoted library users and supporters!
