In a sense, virtually no study of Yankton's history can be complete without Karolevitz's writings.
The author, now based out of Mission Hill, has been a thorough chronicler of the city's long past. He has written several books exploring Yankton's history, the most recent of which, "Yankton: The Way It Was," is a collection of historical columns that ran each week in the Press & Dakotan.
But his talents stretch beyond the field of history. He is the author of more than 30 books, ranging in topics from small-town newspapers to motorcycles. He also writes a weekly column that appears in several newspapers.
Karolevitz, who was Yankton's 1998 Citizen of the Year, is a charter member of the South Dakota Hall of Fame. He has also won, among many other honors, the Wrangler Award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award from the South Dakota Newspaper Association and the Writer of the Year from the state Hall of Fame.
