Paws Across The Prairie: Support Animals Through Heartland Humane Society

By: Susan Tuve
Heartland Humane Society Board

Heartland Humane Society (HHS) is a privately funded organization. We take no money from public sources or other animal welfare organizations. We depend on the generosity of people and businesses that understand the importance of animals in our lives and want to ensure that our companion animals are wanted and cared for.

Private gifts can take many forms:

There are outright current gifts (cash, appreciated securities, personal property and real estate.) With such gifts immediate tax benefits are received by the donor.

There are bequests. You may make a gift to HHS in your will or name us as a beneficiary of your retirement assets at your death. When you make a bequest of retirement assets to HHS, a charitable organization, you avoid the two-fold taxation the government imposes on tax deferred retirement plans. (Please note that the ability to make a current gift from your IRA ended Dec. 31, 2007. There is pending legislation in congress to bring that back?stay tuned).

Finally, there are split interest gifts where you can make a gift of appreciated assets. You can supplement your income with a payout from that gift for a term of years or over your life. The remainder is then for us to use.

Charitable giving can be a win-win situation with benefits to you and the animals. Contact Heartland Humane Society at hhs@iw.net or (605) 664-4244 about your interest in making a gift to us.
