SIOUX FALLS — The Brandon Valley girls beat out defending Class AA champion Yankton by one point at the O’Gorman Invitational cross country meet on Friday.

Brandon Valley finished with 36 points, one better than the Gazelles. Sioux Falls Lincoln was a close third in the five-team event with 39 points.

Lincoln’s Katie Patrick won the race, with Yankton’s Whitlee Larson second. No times were reported.

Also for Yankton, Annie Kruse finished sixth, Savannah Woods seventh, Sarah Hicks 28th and Abbey Van Meeteren 31st.

Lincoln claimed the top three individual spots to finish with 17 points, well ahead of Brandon Valley (36) and Yankton (52). The Patriots’ Nathan Schroeder won, with Luke Jelen second and Will Lauer third.

Yankton was led by the fourth place finish of Brice Cowman. Also for the Bucks, Nathan Nelson finished 14th, Ryan Olson 16th, Evan Bergeson 24gth, Jacob Bies 27th, Dylan Kortan 29th, Austin Hill 31st, Dusty Dvorak 36th and Will Steward 37th.

The Yankton girls finished second in the JV division, led by Holly Hicks and Tessa Folkers, who finished sixth and seventh.

Yankton finished fifth in the JV boys’ division, led by Kyle Bergeson’s 16th place finish.

Yankton heads to the Brandon Valley Invitational on Thursday, Aug. 30.

BERESFORD — The Lennox boys and Canton girls claimed top honors in the Beresford Invitational cross country meet, held on Friday at The Bridges Golf Course in Beresford.

Lennox put two runners in the top seven and four in the top 15 to beat out two-time Class B champion Parker in the event, 37-49. Beresford finished third at 63, followed by Sioux Falls Christian (79) and Dakota Valley (83).

Parker’s Duane Jongeling, the two-time defending Class B champion, started his senior season with a 62.1-second victory, finishing the 5,000-meter course in 17:07.95 to beat out Dakota Valley’s Graham Bacon. Vermillion’s Nathan Ford finished third (18:17.24), followed by Irene-Wakonda’s Jack Johnson (18:27.09).

Led by individual champion Halie McMains, Canton finished with 60 points, six points better than runner-up Gayville-Volin. Beresford (67), Dakota Valley (71) and Bon Homme (77) followed closely behind.

McMains finished the 4,000-meter course in 15:42.44, just under 34 seconds ahead of Gayville-Volin freshman Geneieve Clark (16:16.31). Lennox’s Maisey Bainbridge (16:20.21) finished third, followed by Justine Van Zee (16:27.62) of Sioux Falls Christian and Laura Nelson (16:31.40) of Gayville-Volin.

Freeman’s Cody Roth won the JV boys’ race (3,000 meters) in 11:07.74. Harrisburg put four runners in the top 11 to take the JV boys’ title.

Parker’s Makenzie Dean took the JV girls’ race (3,000 meters) in 13:11.18. Dakota Valley won the team title.

Junior high honors went to Taden Wilson of Lennox (11:48.05) in the boys’ race and Caitlin Worth of Beresford (13:06.84) in the girls’ race. Both races were 3,000 meters.

PIERRE — Pierre runners swept individual honors in a home cross country triangular on Friday. No team points were kept in the event, which also featured Aberdeen Central and Rapid City Central.

Pierre’s Matt Monfore led a 1-2-3 finish for the Governors, clocking a 13:35.5 in the 4,000-meter event. Steven Gordon (14:09.3) finished third, with Jebben Keyes (14:20.6) placing fourth. Aberdeen Central runners took the next five spots.

The Lady Govs’ Rachel Probst won by 31 seconds in the girls’ race, clocking a 15:26 over the 4,000-meter course. Rapid City Central’s Adeline Straatmeyer (16:07.4) finished second, followed by three runners from Aberdeen Central, led by Hannah Kastigar (16:15.4).
