IPFW Rocks Chicago State
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Ben Botts and Jeremy Mixon each scored 20 points and IPFW allowed a season low in points in a 95-50 victory over Chicago State on Tuesday night.
Frank Gaines added 16 points, Trey McCorkle had 15 and Zach Plackemeier finished with 10 points and 11 assists for the Mastodons (16-8).
Jonathon Montgomery scored 15 to lead the Cougars (6-18), who have allowed 90 or more points in 12 games this season.
IPFW limited Chicago State to 18.8 percent shooting in the first half and took a 51-15 lead into intermission. The Mastodons extended their lead to 55 in the second half and shot 53.4 percent overall.
The Cougars scored the game’s first points on a dunk by Victor Scott, but IPFW scored the next eight and never trailed again. The Mastodons closed the first half on a 29-2 run.
DRAKE 67, CREIGHTON 64: DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ben Simons scored 18 points as Drake ran its winning streak to three games with a 67-64 victory over Creighton on Tuesday night.
Rayvonte Rice added 16 points and Seth VanDeest 12 for the Bulldogs (11-14, 6-8 Missouri Valley). Simons also had team highs of eight rebounds and three assists.
Antoine Young’s career-high 24 points led the Bluejays (15-11, 7-7), and Gregory Echenique added 11.
Young scored Creighton’s final nine points in helping turn a nine-point deficit with 2:28 left into a 66-64 game with 5 seconds to go.
Kurt Alexander sank a free throw for Drake with 3 seconds left, and then Young’s last-second half-court shot hit the backboard and the front of the rim before bouncing away.
Drake led by 10 in the first half but went into intermission up only 29-28. Tied 49-49, Jordan Clarke’s basket gave the Bulldogs the lead for good with 8:44 left.
EVANSVILLE 70, N. IOWA 62: EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Ned Cox scored a season-high 16 points and Evansville held off a late rally to beat Northern Iowa 70-62 Tuesday night.
Kavon Lacey added 11 points for the Purple Aces (14-10, 8-6 Missouri Valley), who have won five straight conference home games for the first time since 1997-98.
Anthony James scored 21 points and Johnny Moran had 15 for the Panthers (18-8, 9-5), who have lost two straight after winning a season-high eight in a row.
Evansville opened the second half on an 8-2 run and took its biggest lead, 42-26, on Cox’s 3-pointer with 15:06 remaining. Northern Iowa pulled to within 58-54 with 1:43 to play before the Aces squelched the Panthers’ rally with seven unanswered points.
Evansville took a 34-24 advantage into halftime after closing the half on a 10-3 run.
