Exploratory Classes For Youth Expanded For 2009
Another series of classes, called C-MOTE Controllers, will begin in January 2009 at the Technical Education Center, 1200 W. 21st St. in Yankton.
The series was created to challenge, encourage and inspire students to explore new concepts and expand their knowledge of computers, math, occupations, technology, engineering and science. The classes are designed for students who are at least 10 years of age or older.
Like last fall’s first slate of C-MOTE Controllers classes, the spring courses will be held after school from 4-5:30 p.m. several days a week at the Technical Education Center, the home of RTEC and Southeast Job Link. Many will feature Dennis Roy, Youth Development/4-H Program Assistant for Yankton County, as an instructor.
C-MOTE Controllers classes scheduled to be offered in this session include:
• Electronics Rewind — Students will utilize their mechanical skills and ingenuity as they spend time taking apart electronic gadgets and then discovering what they can create from the salvaged parts. Class will be offered from 4-5:30 p.m. on Jan. 5, 7, 12, 14, 21, 26 and 28. Fee required.
• Egg-citing Experiments — Students will push their critical thinking skills to the cracking point as they try to construct contraptions to protect an egg from breaking during a series of dropping experiments and varied crash tests. Class will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. on Feb. 2, 4, 9, 11, 23 and 25. Fee required.
• Young Design Camp — Students will simulate the building process using interactive software as they plan, design and determine the costs that come with having a home of their own. Class will be presented from 4-5:30 p.m. on March 3, 5, 10, 12 and 17. Fee required.
• Advanced Robotics — Students will learn to create, build, operate and program robots in unique and creative ways using Lego MindStorms in this class geared for older students. Must be at least 12 to enroll. Class will be conducted from 4-5:30 p.m. on March 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23 and 25. Fee required.
• Hovercrafts 101 — Students will take their mechanical skills to the next level as they learn the science behind hovercrafts — vehicles which ride on a cushion of air. Participants will build small hovercrafts before working in groups to construct larger ones. Must be at least 12 to enroll. Class will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. on April 1, 6, 8, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29. Fee required.
