Wednesday, January 3, 1934
• Work of repairing the new swimming poll and skating rink in the tourist park in Yankton was completed yesterday, and last evening water was turned back into the pool. Within the next two weeks, there should be enough water to make ice skating possible.
• Babe Ruth has once again started his annual tussle with gobs of fat at his waistline. The farewell to fat becomes a trifle more difficult each winter, but the mighty man of the Yankees is confident he can get his weight down to reasonable limits for his 21st major league campaign.

• The Vermillion fire department answered a call at about 7:15 a.m. today to the Joe Clark farm, one-half mile east of Meckling, where the 1 1/2-story house burned to the ground.
• Yankton topped Madison 57-36 in ESD basketball action last night. Jim Hohn led the Bucks with 12 points.

• Never in recorded weather history was there a colder December in Nebraska than December 1983. “It’s the most extreme (weather) I’ve ever seen,” said Harvey Freese, partner in the Des Moines, Iowa-based Freese-Notis Weather, Inc., a private forecasting service. “I knew it could do this, but I was very much awed by the situation. It’s very rare.”
• Katherine Anne Kingsbury, daughter of Randall and Sandra Kingsbury of Vermillion, arrived at 8:06 a.m. Jan. 1 as the first baby of the New Year born at Yankton’s Sacred Heart Hospital.
