Two Republicans have been selected as ballot replacements in the District 17 and 19 House races for the Legislature.
• In District 17, Roger Tigert of Vermillion has been selected to replace John Lang of Lennox, who withdrew from the race. The district includes Clay County and most of Turner County.
The other candidates include Republican Jamie Boomgarden of Chancellor and Democrats Eldon Nygaard and John Reedy, both of Vermillion. Boomgarden and Nygaard are incumbents, while Reedy has served in the Legislature.
• In District 19, former legislator Bill VanGerpen of Tyndall has been selected to replace incumbent Gary Jerke of Tripp, who withdrew from the race. The district includes Bon Homme, Douglas and Hutchinson counties and northwest Turner County.
The rest of the field includes Republican incumbent J.E. “Jim” Putnam of Armour, Democrats Travis Lape of Marion and Glennis Stern of Armour, and independent Richard Hall of Scotland.
Two House candidates are chosen from each legislative district for the two-year terms.
According to state elections supervisor Kea Warne, the political parties had until 5 p.m. Tuesday to fill vacancies for candidates who had withdrawn from a race.
“The names can be sent in by registered mail, so we may get a few more (Wednesday),” she said.
Any candidate who wanted to withdraw from the November general ballot had until 5 p.m. Aug. 5 to file the request with the Secretary of State’s office, Warne said.
“After a candidate withdraws, the party central committee (for a county) has to hold a meeting to make an appointment and file an official form that is sent to our office,” she said. “The state central committee submits the form, but the party central committee holds the meeting that makes the appointment.”
The replacement candidate is selected by the majority of those attending the meeting, Warne said. If a candidate is needed for a multi-county legislative district, such as Districts 17 and 19, those counties hold a joint meeting to select the replacement, she said.
Warne said she had received no requests for candidate withdrawals or replacements from District 18 (Yankton County) or District 21, which includes Brule, Buffalo, Charles Mix, Jones and Lyman counties.
Independent candidates needed to file their petitions by June 3, which was the primary election for the political parties, Warne said.
